On 22 and 23 September Zapcat Racing headed to Watergate Bay, Newquay, for Rounds 11 and 12 of the 2007 Zapcat National Championship. This event is also the first in the King of Surf contest where we see Zapcatters battle for the title.

The 2007 Zapcat National Championship is drawing to a close for this season, and with only 85 points separating third and eighth places at the start of the weekend everyone was ready to fight for those precious championship points.

Watergate Bay, as always, supplied us with perfect conditions to challenge the racers and the waves caught out many of the teams, rookies and experienced racers alike giving the Safety Team the opportunity to show us what they’re made of.

Saturday’s Division 2 final saw Zapcat 80 Marinesport #2 piloted by Sunil Panniker fight for first place, with 22 Clear Air Turbulence follow closely behind. In Division 1 Championship leaders Mick Pritchard and Baz Minns of 08 Pegasus Vortex Racing gave everything they’d got in the final and it paid off with another win. Boat 37 Go Commando piloted by Richie Lake and 06 Strong Language also battled the conditions to get onto the podium.

Sunday’s conditions didn’t differ and the racers, with the addition of a few bruises, got back in their boats again to make their assault on the Championship leader board. With a few lessons learned from Saturday the racing increased pace and top positions became harder to achieve. The Division 2 podium was nearly all Go Commando with two of the three Royal Marine teams coming in with first and second places. After damaging their boat on Saturday, 50 Cheeky Chappie Racing borrowed a boat and managed to squeeze onto the podium in third place. 08 Pegasus Vortex Racing were once again unstoppable and bagged another first place in the Division 1 final giving them an unassailable 225-point lead in the 2007 Zapcat National Championship. Second place went to team mates 69 Vortex Racing, piloted by Craig Davis with co-pilot Rob Martin; 25 Rana Park took third.
