Zapcats are high-speed powerboats. They are catamarans that have been fitted with 50hp tohatsu engines and can cut through water at speeds up to 50mph.

The choppier the waves, the better the surf, and the more exciting the action.

Developed from life saving surf rescue craft for racing and leisure, Zapcats are designed to cope with a huge variety of sea conditions from the flat calm lakes to large breaking surf.

The 22/23 September will see the Southampton based Zapcat team of Mick Pritchard and Baz Minns head to the popular surfing beach of Watergate Bay in Newquay for the penultimate rounds of the 2007 Zapcat Championship.

Currently leading the 2007 National Championship team Pegasus Vortex Racing will be planning to extend their lead over their closest rivals Dave Pagent and Tony Cooper from Potential.

Having raced most of the season, each of the teams now discards their worst two scores of the year before heading into the last four rounds of the 2007 season (where scores cannot be dropped).

Up until now the 2007 Zapcat season has been about the need for speed, racing on predominately flat waters it's been about opening the throttle and speeding to victory. Watergate Bay will provide a different challenge for the competitors, where knowledge of the surf and waves will benefit the brave.

Past years of Watergate Bay have seen the Zapcats pit their wits in up to 12ft surf. As relentless swells role in from the North Atlantic to Newquay's coast providing pounding surf.

Rounds 11 & 12 of the National Championship will also produce the first 2 rounds on the King of Surf contest a highly contested title almost as prestigious as that of the Zapcat Champion.

The concluding two rounds will return to Watergate Bay as the finale of the National Championship and the last rounds of the King of Surf contest on the 12/13 October 2007.
