Commanding the Waves at Watergate

Saturday saw the final round of the 2009 Zapcat National Championship at Watergate Bay in Newquay.

22 boats competed for the final points in their championship campaigns, Friday’s racing had seen Zapcat 03 BlueSheets Racing 1 Craig Davis and Rob Martin secure enough points to take them clear and uncatchable making them the 2009 Champions.

But with the King of Surf title still up for grabs and 2nd and 3rd still undecided tensions were high heading into Saturdays racing as teams were working out what results were required for them to achieve their final goals.

Conditions were awesome with crashing waves creating spectacular surf  that Zapcats  thrive in. Division 2 heats saw Zapcat 37, Royal Marine Commando State of Mind, Pilot Richie Lake and Co-pilot Andy Farmer get of to a storming start taking top scores in their heats to secure a strong place in the final. Zapcat 28, Westgate Charles Morris and George Moger were also pushing hard securing good results to take them into the final in second on pole.

Meanwhile in Division 1 the battle was on between the top 5 boats all chasing for those extra vital points as  2nd & 3rd in the championship remained in contention. Zapcat 03 BlueSheets Racing 1 with the pressure off in the title campaign they still had to focus as they set their sights on securing the King of the Surf title from Zapcat 25, Rana Park pilot Neil Fraser and Jeremy Nazarin who’s win on Friday had narrowed the gap considerably leaving BlueSheets no room for error.

Zapcat 37 Commando State of Mind took the lead heading into the Division 2 final and with all 4 of the Go Commando Marine teams securing a spot in the 7 boat final there were sure to be a few battle along the way. As the flags dropped Zapcat 14 Contact Wait out brothers Paul and Ed Holt took the lead with Westgate Zapcat 28 putting pressure on them during their  first 3 laps. Disaster struck for both boats as they were heading out for the penultimate lap as they both took a wave wrong and flipped leaving the race to be restarted. Commando State of Mind capitalised on this restart getting off the grid first followed by the other two remaining commando teams.

Zapcat 37 Commando State of Mind held the lead for the remaining two laps to take the final Gold Medal in the season, with Zapcat 42 Go Commando Andrew ‘H’ Harriman and Helen Redwood taking silver and Zapcat 41 Commando Spirit driven by Paul Moxom and Paul Logie completing the Royal Marine line up taking the Bronze.

The Division 1 final would seal fates in the 2009 championship with the 4 out of 5 teams in contention for 2nd & 3rd in the championship making the final race of the season. Proving why their the champions BlueSheets Racing 1  got the best start and leading the race from the green flag. Zapcat 38 Speedy Hire, Daren Ford and Sam Hunka hoping to secure the bronze position in the championship, saw lightning strike twice in two days as in a repeat of Friday’s final they got caught by a wave on the inshore straight and saw them left to wait on the beach while the rest of the final played out  to see if they were secure in the championship top 3.

A 3 lap restart saw BlueSheets Racing take the lead again with Zapcat 09, Marin Subsea/Delta Jets Ashley Chappell and Chris Rex right behind them and pushing for first, a move that would see them steal 3rd in the championship from Speedy Hire who stood looking on from the beach.
BlueSheets Racing 1 took the chequered flag for another gold in the season seeing them secure the king of the Surf title as well as the championship campaign. Marin Subsea/Delta Jets took the silver. Securing the bronze and 5th in the national championship were father and son duo  Zapcat 39, Cat in the Hat Jim and CJ Crooks.

Speedy Hire were safe as the result came in they maintained 3rd place in the Zapcat National Championship with a 5 point lead.

So with the results in the Zapcat racers and officials headed to the Watergate Hotel for an evening of Fun Frolics and festivities as the Awards for the season were given out.

Hopefully this will give everyone a good idea of the planned dates for next year, realistically there shouldnt be too many changes to this calender but please do not start booking time off / holidays or start making any travel / accommodation arrangements just yet, as dates and venues may be subject to change until confirmed.
